Cotton Candy Skies

Our coastal communities, from Holden Beach to Calabash, are blessed with some of the most stunning sunsets.
December 4, 2024
Have you ever witnessed a sky so vibrant, it looked like a giant cotton candy swirl?

Our coastal communities, from Holden Beach to Calabash, are blessed with some of the most stunning sunsets. These breathtaking displays, often referred to as "cotton candy skies," are a testament to the beauty of nature.

What Causes Cotton Candy Skies?

The magic behind these colorful skies lies in a phenomenon known as scattering. Tiny particles and molecules in the atmosphere scatter sunlight, dispersing it into various colors. As the sun sets, the light has to travel through more of the atmosphere, resulting in a greater scattering effect. This is why we see such vivid hues of orange, pink, and purple.

I took this photo on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, in November 2024 - the beach is an amazing place in the off season - almost better, some would say, than the busy summer season!

So, the next time you're on the coast, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of a cotton candy sky. It's a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.
